Viva New Orleans…

Date July 6, 2008 | 11:00 PM

I’m back in New Orleans for a two-week workshop.  It’s good to be here staying with friends… even if the drive is long and the drivers are bad.

Tonight I had the pleasure of seeing a group of MissionLab youth try to walk into a closed McDonalds near campus.  Oh the wonderful confusion of a bunch of Georgians trying to figure out what to do next, now that Plan A was taken away.  Haha, I guess you had to be there.  The line in the drive through was wrapped around the building, and these two mini-buses filled with the only white folks within sight at 9:45PM… and the fearless leader stepping in front of traffic to walk up to the drive-thru window to see if they could make an order.

They’re probably still there now, trying to figure it all out.  (Burger King, Popeyes, and Wendy’s were also still open.)  What a sight… youth groups in New Orleans… always an entertaining time in the Crescent City.

Hey Joe. Had not checked out your blog in a year and a half. Glad to see you are still on the air. I sort of met you on Wednesday August 30th 2006 after the service at Edgewater. I was there with a group from Riverside Baptist in Denver. There were no introductions so I guess I am only pretty sure it was you. You look like the same guy. You were giving somebody a ride that night. Anyway, I still find a smile here as you are amusing. Hope you manage the heat(yeah, itwould be the 99 degrees Joe).

May you see the blessings of the Lord everyday.

    B-

    Barclay,

Thanks for the comment. I wish I could say I remember meeting you, but there were so many visitors from 2006-2008 that I couldn’t begin to keep count. I’ll say this- if you were from Riverside, Edgewater is and will always be in your debt. What you guys have done for us down here (I say us down here because I’m in NOLA for a couple weeks, even though I’ve moved to DFW) has truly been a demonstration of the cooperation and love among the church body. When I think of the early church and search for contemporary examples, Riverside and FBC Thomasville (GA) are tops on my list, as are the many churches that came to New Orleans after Katrina.

I’ll never forget it, and I plan to pay it forward when I’m in a similar circumstance to help others. Know that is a part of Riverside’s legacy.

PS: It’s a tough call, but at least for today, I’m giving the edge to Fort Worth. It’s hotter there.
