Invoking the Name of Mondale…

Date May 15, 2008 | 12:00 AM

Clinton campaign manager Terry McAuliffe explained that in 1980 Senator Ted Kennedy fought Jimmy Carter and in 1984 Gary Hart fought Walter Mondale all the way to their respective Democratic National Conventions in an effort to gain the party’s nomination. He said this to show that Clinton was doing the right thing by staying in the race. The irony is that both Carter and Mondale lost the general election… and even though I wasn’t really paying attention to politics at the time (I was only born in 1981), I think they were both blown out by Reagan. Good thing John McCain is no Ronald Reagan… but isn’t McAuliffe making the exact point that the Obama campaign is? The longer the Democrats fight, the easier it will be for McCain to win.

I’m just saying, if you want to show that your candidate’s delusional power-hungry campaigning is a good idea in light of the fact that your opponent has momentum, charisma, and a plan to actually do something… maybe you don’t want to invoke the names of Mondale and Carter, Kennedy and Hart. Especially after Carter was shown to be a fool in the Middle East recently.

I’m just saying.
