Blue Ridge Fogged In…
March 30, 2008 | 10:49 PM
While I was on the Blue Ridge Parkway on Saturday, I realized there was a reason I was alone: fog. The whole day I battled fog and rain- from Virginia through North Carolina to Tennessee. I spent about 3 hours on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, then I took some time on I-77 south into North Carolina. In a stupid attempt to hit Nashville without traveling through Knoxville, I ended up south of Smokey Mountain National Park. It was a pretty big mistake and I ended up inadvertently driving through the Smokeys to Knoxville. I lost a couple hours, and I didn’t make it to Columbia, Tennessee until nearly 10PM central time. It was a long, hard day of driving in foggy, rainy mountains. Eesh. But it was worth it for the photos.
This morning I left Columbia and headed straight down I-65 to I-59 and into New Orleans. I was going to take the Natchez Trace Parkway, but after the last two days of driving, it seemed wiser just to drive on home.

Beautiful!! I was in Atlanta for a long weekend (got back tonight) and we had a lot of fog too. Different kind of trees — the really tall metallic kind — being obscured there, but it doesn’t seem to matter. Fog adds an intense beauty and sense of solitude (even if you aren’t really alone) to every landscape.
And I don’t blame you one bit for wanting to avoid Knoxville. I hate driving through there. Sadly, there really is no way to get to Charlotte from here without going through hell—I mean, Knoxville.
But at least you tried. And saw some amazing sights while you were at it.
