The Hope of John [Became Flesh]…

Date October 25, 2007 | 12:00 AM

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”  This verse is, of course, the climax of all time.  Everything—past, present, and future—points to the grand entrance of God into the world.  It isn’t just about Christmas—it’s about the world’s only hope coming to our rescue.  For us the glory points to the cross.  Without the events in verse fourteen, there is no hope for humanity.

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, who lived perfectly, was crucified, and resurrected so that the final sacrifice would be made on our behalf and the light of the grace of God could overcome the darkness of man.  All of history points to this moment.  Hallelujah!  The Word became flesh and dwelt among us!

“And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.  For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.  No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.”  We are a people begging for Hope- the hope of rescue from ourselves.  We look to Superman to be our Savior.  We watch Spiderman battle the Darkness within himself, reflecting our collective battle against the evil inside ourselves.  Our thirst for tolerance and acceptance is seen through the X-Men.  Our hope isn’t in Hollywood.  Our hope is not in our iPod or iPhone.  It’s not in Caesar, Zeus, or Buddha.  America’s hope is not in Bush or Barack.  Africa’s hope is not in Bono.  Our hope is in the grace of God found only through Christ.
