Day 13: The Badlands…
July 6, 2007 | 12:08 AM
Today I drove from Rapid City, South Dakota to North Platte, Nebraska. In between that drive I hit the town of Wall (home of Wall Drug, which had been advertising since Wyoming), the Badlands National Park, and Buffalo Gap National Grassland. The Badlands were particularly impressive, if not reminiscent of parts of southeastern Utah (in 2000, my parents and I drove out west through New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado and it was great). I saw a lot of prairie dogs, which was fun. And the drive down US-83 was perfect- I saw about ten cars the whole time.
At one point I drove through one of the towns where Dances With Wolves was filmed. And a couple other movies/documentaries were filmed in a few other areas I’ve been on the trip, including Saskatchewan, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Nebraska.
Which brings me to a list of places I’d rather never visit again. I know. Bummer. But think of it this way- I’ve covered so much territory, it’s easier to say I’d skip returning to these places than to list all the spots I’d gladly go see again. So, here it is: Western Montana; North Platte and Lincoln, Nebraska; Mount Rushmore. There. That’s it. Pretty simple. The rest of my trip includes places I’ve already been- Enid, Oklahoma and Denton, Texas. I may or may not spend another night in the Glen Rose area before heading back to New Orleans on Monday instead of Sunday. I haven’t made that decision yet.
Here are all the pictures from the Badlands, and the entire Canada trip set.

So Mount Rushmore is one of those places I’ve kept saying I should go see since I was a kid. Thought it was un-American not too. Are you saying it would be okay for me to take it off my life to-do list without any real guilt that I had missed out on a national treasure if an earthquake or something obliterates it next year?

Dorcas, I’m saying if you never make it to Mount Rushmore, you’re not going to miss anything. But if you never visit Kananaskis in the Canadian Rockies, Canyonlands (Arches, Monument, etc.) in Utah, or Yellowstone, you’re missing out on a lot, and you’ve done yourself a disservice. This is what I’m saying.
