Day 7: Medicine Hat, The Gas City…

The Chessboard, Downtown Medicine Hat

There are so many jokes I could make about the city’s slogan. Seriously. “The Gas City.” Too easy.

I went to Medicine Hat’s historic downtown today. The walking tour around the 1st Street SE corridor was short- 93F is hot, even without humidity. I started in a small park, which had a Canadian Pacific train engine, a Korean War Memorial, an ampitheatre, and a fountain. From the park, I walked onto the bridge that crosses the South Saskatchewan River to the north side of Medicine Hat. I had a view of City Hall from the bridge, and then from the corner of 2nd Avenue and 1st Street.

After passing City Hall and the Courthouse, I stumbled upon a life-size chess board. Check out the detail on the knight piece. The public library was next, and across the street was The Esplanade- a gallery, theatre, and museum. The gallery exhibit was being changed, so I only went to the museum, which offered a history of Medicine Hat. I highly recommend it- and it was kind of nice because I was the only person there and had plenty of time. I forgot to take a picture of The Esplanade, and photography wasn’t allowed inside.

Upon leaving the Esplanade, I ran across a Canada Post Office, where I got a few collector stamps (thanks for the tip, Sarah). I saw St. John’s Church, which was built in 1884, and some fruit on a tree. And then I came back to the motel. I’ll be going back out in a little while.

You can learn more about historic Medicine Hat by going here, and you can see all my Canada 2007 Trip photos here.
