Day 3: Oh! Canada…

South Dakota Barn

I left Lincoln around 8:15 AM, and arrived in Winnipeg about 9:00 PM. Lincoln is a nice enough place- kind of like a big little city. I drove through Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Manitoba. Driving through the hills of Eastern South Dakota, I couldn’t help but feel like I was on a bridge through a sea of green. The wind blew across the plains, giving the grassy hills a sense of choppiness. Make it blue and it could have been Lake Pontchartrain. Beautiful.

This morning my mom asked me if I was going to the part of Canada that had all the tornadoes last weekend. Of course she didn’t want to know, but tomorrow I’ll be driving along the Trans-Canada Highway, where a tornado ripped through fields near Elie. It was supposed to storm all day, every day I’ve been on the road. On the way to Texas Saturday, I didn’t get more than 5 minutes of sustained rain. Yesterday and today I don’t remember seeing a drop, although the fields to either side of I-29 looked as if they had recently flooded. I pray it doesn’t flood while I’m up here. Especially after the whole Katrina thing. I might start thinking it’s following me.

Oh… I initially forgot to mention that I listened to Barack Obama’s The Audacity of Hope from Iowa to North Dakota today. It was interesting, and it was like having the guy in my passenger seat for about 7 or 8 hours. Obama narrated it himself, and did a pretty good job making it sound conversational. Storytime with Barack. I’m not going to worry about the content on here, but I did want to mention that it’s pretty interesting and you might want to pick up a copy- audiobook or hardcover.

As for the picture… the barn scene you see above is a part of a panorama I’m working on, but I haven’t completed it yet. Tomorrow I explore Winnipeg and Southern Manitoba.
