Day 2: Hello Lincoln…

Date June 24, 2007 | 10:14 PM

Nebraska: Land of Corn and Wheat

I’m exhausted. I left Granbury around 10AM and got to Lincoln around 9:30PM. That’s driving through Oklahoma and Kansas from bottom to top… each. I’ve racked up nearly 21 driving hours and 1355 miles. I feel each and every one of those miles right now. By the way, the speed limit on I-80 (at least from York to Lincoln) is 75mph. I didn’t know “they” did that.

I didn’t really stop to take many pictures today. I took eight pictures and uploaded five. However, I drove through one very photogenic town in south Kansas called Arkansas City. I hope to stop on my way back through Kansas. I did manage to cross both the Oklahoma-Kansas and Kansas-Nebraska borders via back roads- not so much on purpose, but this gadget I have kept telling me it was faster. About an hour into Kansas I realized I had set it to help me avoid toll roads, and I’d have shaved off almost an hour off my total drive time today if I’d just stayed on the main road. But if I hadn’t gotten off the Interstate, I wouldn’t have seen Arkansas City to return to.

The picture above sums up today’s drive. Corn. Wheat. Corn. Wheat. Soy? Corn. Tree. Silo. Corn. Monday’s drive takes me from Lincoln to Winnipeg. That’s right. Tomorrow I arrive in Canada. Unless the Canadians tell me to go home.

A herd of teenage girls is stampeding up and down the hall here in my motel. It may be another long night.
