Storying to Postmoderns: Introduction…
May 26, 2007 | 6:30 PM
[I wrote this paper for my Transcultural Communication of the Gospel class at NOBTS this spring, and I've decided to post it here.]
Postmodernity has taken root across the world. No longer is the Bible held with the regard it once was. However, the shift from modernity to postmodernity can be seen as a renewed emphasis on personal experience, including personal spirituality. While organized religion may be shunned as it was under the scientific reason of modern thought, postmoderns are more open to the gospel than their predecessors. However, one must grasp postmodern thought and learn to communicate the gospel properly to produce results.
In order to fully understand how to communicate the gospel to postmoderns, one must first understand the basic beliefs and worldview of a postmodern. Certainly, each person has his or her own personal context. That is, each person has an individual story defined by that person’s age, gender, family background, ethnic background, religious background, education, and nationality, among many other variables. However, in this case, postmodernity is the constant. The purpose of this paper is to offer a short overview of postmodernity, discuss the content of the gospel, and offer methods of transmission of the gospel to postmoderns.
