Defining Success in the 21st Century…

Easily the most difficult question asked each individual interviewed was “how do you define success in your ministry context?” The general consensus was that success is not about numbers; it is about transformation. Each used a different word: restoration, life-change, and making disciples. Richard Kennedy said that success is defined by “the ‘melding’ of a group of individuals of like mind into a focused and committed body that has the desire to bring Christ to those that have not accepted him or have fallen away from him.” Jason Davis explained that success is life-change, “that our Christians become more like Christ and that non-Christians move toward His image.” Todd McGehee thinks it’s about making “ordinary radicals who live out their faith in all aspects of life.” In the end, it seems that success in any form of ministry is unity among believers, participation in ministry, and transformation into the likeness of Christ.
