One Day It Started Raining…

“One day it started raining, and it didn’t quit for four months. We been through every kind of rain there is. Little bitty stingin’ rain… and big ol’ fat rain. Rain that flew in sideways. And sometimes rain even seemed to come straight up from underneath.” -Forrest Gump

It’s rained every day for what seems like the last month and a half. I’m used to it- summers in the Deep South are like this. Sometimes it seems like it won’t end, but it always does. Here I am listening to the Fray’s album, “How to Save a Life” and thinking about the rain. This evening it was like God wanted to remind us that no laser-show can outdo His lightning. James walked over across Iroquois Street and stood with me watching the rain and the road become the River Iroquois as the lightning crashed down around us. At times our voices were drowned out by the thunderous roar that followed such a wonderous and brilliant streak across the sky. It’s evenings like this one that remind me to appreciate the beauty and power of this creation. All creation points to the glory of God, indeed.

I was in Big Lots a couple weeks ago and I nearly walked out with a 10 dollar rubber raft and set of oars. I thought it’d be funny if I named it “Plan B” and floated down the River Iroquois when it floods. Tonight we watched the air bubble out of the manholes in the street, as six inches of water washed around. A few people moved their cars to higher ground- every time a truck would drive by, the water would go up their tail pipes. I’m sure there’s a lesson in there about buying low-riding Cadillacs in New Orleans, but I think that’s for others to learn. I just love it when it rains.
