Look, I’m Covered in Poo…

One time, these seminary students living in New Orleans went to Mardi Gras to preach the gospel. Part of their ministry was to offer port-a-potty (hereby referred to as “the Poo Shack”) use for $5, and sometimes the Poo Shack would get clogged. The students would trade off which entered the Poo Shack to unclog it with a stick (hereby referred to as “the Poo-Stick”). Hour after hour went by, and one by one each would perform the important task of unclogging with the Poo Stick. Then one of the students unknowingly grabbed the wrong end of the Poo Stick as he headed to the Poo Shack. Immediately he realized what he had done. His hand was covered in poo. Now, his response was unusual, because instead of gasping in horror and running to wash his hands, all the while avoiding the attention such news might bring, the student raised his hand and loudly proclaimed, “My hand is covered in poo! Look!” And he proceeded to show it to each of his friends, and even some strangers. Proudly he showed his poo-covered hand as if it were the grandest event in his life, as his friends looked onward in awe and amusement.
Too many times we are proud of our poo-covered lives. Too often we are proud of our sin, and the sin of others. Sometimes we’re proud of our friends who live out their sin in very harmful ways. We think it’s cute when so-and-so gets tipsy. We think it’s funny when so-and-so gets so jacked up on Acid that she sees evil Smurfs running around. We are amused at the sin of others. We are amused at our own sin. Too often we are proud of it. No more.
