The Reason for My Pleas…

Date March 26, 2005 | 4:27 AM

I’ve been sure in the past to talk to those I knew were about to go to public universities about the dangers of being a Christian in such an environment. Most of the time I’ve been shrugged off as some kind of alarmist. Today I was talking to a friend of mine from Auburn who began the same time as me. He went to the same church I went to the summer I had my conversion experience back in Mobile and somehow we got on the topic of the old “group” from there that went to Auburn (or other public universities in the state). Of that list, only one remained at Auburn through graduation and continued in his obedience to the Faith. I count myself as one who got away with his life. Today was a reminder of God’s grace in allowing me to start fresh at the University of Mobile. Something like 10 fell, 1 stayed the course. I exclude myself. I got out barely with my life. I’m not out to bash the people who fell. I don’t know for sure how they’re doing or what their faith looks like now. I’ve made my fair share of mistakes, as many as theirs. Some of mine have been public, some haven’t. I don’t have a lesson. I just see the odds. 1 in 5 maybe? 1 in 10? Is it more of an indictment on public universities or the lack of preparation the Church has given to its youth? Is it both? That is for you to decide. Ten have fallen. Who will be next?
